For optimum availability and excellent performance, Combell’s infrastructure has entirely been connected redundantly – each time via a redundant connection (2 x 1 Gigabit/s) and via a redundant physical access – with two leading transit providers (COLT and Tiscali). As a customer, you can use the full capacity of these lines during peak moments (burst) if required. The existing connections can be easily expanded with more capacity or specific additional carriers that are available through our data centres.
Combell also has its own fibre optic connection (with a capacity of 2 x 10 Gbps) to a second data centre of its own, which is located at a distance of approx. 5 km (LCL). This distance ensures extremely fast response times between both locations. Should both ISPs in the InterXion data centre fail simultaneously despite the redundant access, Internet traffic will still be able to reach your servers through a (redundant) route via the second data centre and its own redundant fibre optic link.
Thanks to the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), Combell’s two data centres, which are connected with their own fibre optics, are combined into one single logical network.
At any given time, and for each individual route, BGP also searches for the fastest available link. BGP bases its routing on the fastest possible path and thus the lowest amount of ‘hops’ or intermediate points in order to reach its final destination. The routers permanently report which underlying systems are available via their route. When a route suddenly becomes unavailable, or when a faster route appears, the neighbouring routers will automatically pick the other route.
Combell provides green hosting. For all decisions and investments, Combell takes power consumption and other environmental aspects as much into account as possible.
The central storage infrastructure (SAN) uses NetApp technology, in part thanks to two type FAS31/40 controllers. Each controller is connected redundantly. Here too, the setup has an N+1 configuration. This means that one controller can completely stop working without any discomfort for the customer.
Each controller has an uptime guarantee of 99.999% offered by the manufacturer. Several disk shelves are connected to these redundant controllers, more particularly in a RAID-60 configuration with 2 spare disks. Choosing RAID-60 implies that 2 hard disks can fail simultaneously without any disruption of the Cloud service.
For its Cloud infrastructure, Combell uses VMware Consolidated Backup. This backup solution has been configured in such a way that a complete backup (snapshot) of the virtual machines is made every day.
These snapshots are saved to an external storage device in another data centre, so that you can simultaneously have an offsite backup at your disposal. The backup is made every day, which means the maximum data loss is 24 hours. The data retention period is 30 days.
