Sustainable technology

Combell works towards a more sustainable future

As a growing technology company, we are aware of our impact on the climate. Therefore, we want to drastically reduce our impact.

By 2023, our CO₂ emissions fell 29% while we grew +12%!

The IT sector has major climate impact

Data centres need a lot of energy

The IT sector consumes a lot of energy. So much that if it were a country, it would be the 3rd largest consumer of electricity, after China and the US.

Often with fossil fuels

Most data centres do not run on green electricity. That creates massive CO₂ emissions.

4% of all CO₂ emissions

By 2024, 4% of global CO₂ emissions will come from the IT sector. By 2040, this could rise to 14%.

Emissions must go down

To meet the goals of the Paris climate agreement, emissions need to fall by 45% over the next 10 years.

Why we choose green energy

Green data centres

All of Combell's Belgian data centres have been powered by renewable energy for years. This is how we try to limit our impact.

In Europe too

Our hosting family team.blue has the same ambition. That is why all its European data centres have switched to green energy.

Green ambitions

We are continuously investing to meet the highest standards and ultimately achieve B Corp certification.

How we are leading the way for a greener IT sector

4 times less emissions than our competitors

In 2022, our group reached 6.38 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per 1 million sales. This compares to 43 tonnes per 1 million in sales for other major hosts. Talk about a huge difference!

But we want even less

Our CO₂ impact needs to be reduced further. That is why we have set ambitious science-based targets for the next 6 years.

Outcome: -29% CO₂ by 2023

Despite our +12% growth, we managed to reduce our CO₂ emissions by 29%.

What are science-based targets?

These are targets that show companies how much they need to reduce their emissions to avoid the worst effects of climate change.

Concrete actions for less CO₂

We invest in climate projects worldwide

Offsetting CO₂

Since it is not (yet) possible to eliminate all CO₂ emissions, we invest in sustainable climate projects that prevent or help reduce CO₂ emissions.

Cooperation with Ecologi

We work with Ecologi to set up global projects to reduce CO₂ and increase biodiversity.

Planting trees in Belgium

In collaboration with GoForest, we are reforesting a piece of land in March-en-Famenne with 1363 new trees.

What are sustainable websites?

A green web host is a hosting provider that takes environmentally friendly measures, such as using renewable energy or CO₂ offsetting. By doing so, they reduce the carbon footprint of their data centres, contributing to a more sustainable internet.
Sustainable websites are those designed and hosted with the environment in mind. For example, they use energy-efficient code, minimal resources, and are often hosted on servers running on green energy. By optimising loading speeds, limiting data consumption and using sustainable hosting, sustainable websites reduce their carbon footprint and thus contribute to a more environmentally friendly internet.
Green hosting is web hosting that uses environmentally friendly measures, such as renewable energy sources or CO₂ offsetting, to reduce its impact on the environment. This helps reduce the carbon footprint of websites and contributes to a more sustainable internet.
Green hosting reduces CO₂ emissions from websites by using renewable energy. This contributes to a more environmentally friendly internet and helps mitigate climate change.
