Multi-layer balancing makes sure your servers take on even tasks on network level (balancing based on IP address) but on application level as well. With smart load balancing you get more stability, increased availability of service and easier, smarter scalability of your setup.
Your load balancer catches all incoming traffic requests and distributes them internally among the machines in your server pool. In level 3 balancing, instead of leaving it to chance, the load balancer keeps track which server is free to take and perform a task in any given moment and allocates jobs to it – guaranteeing that users will be served as quickly as possible and no single server will be overloaded, timing out and blocked. Application level load balancing, also called Level 7 load balancing, is even smarter in distributing traffic and achieves even higher resource optimization. The reason is Level 7 LB allocates traffic based on its purpose. The balancer reads the message and, based on the requested information, directs the user to the server that has the data – images and video are taken from servers optimized for static content, and application data i.e. an update of prices or order status is taken from the application server.
