Why has e-invoicing suddenly become so important? (and especially from 2026!)
To dive straight into your accounting software: e-invoicing is becoming the new standard for B2B invoices. The Belgian government has confirmed that structured electronic invoices will be mandatory for almost all B2B transactions from 1 January 2026.
In practice, this means PDFs and paper invoices are no longer sufficient for the B2B market. E-invoices are exchanged in a machine-readable way, following the European EN 16931 standard. Only then you'll be fully compliant.
Did you know that...
- EN 16931 is the European standard for electronic invoicing?
- It was published in 2017 by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN)?
- This set of rules and methods makes invoices uniform, interoperable and automatically processable across the EU?
What will change for SMEs and startups?
