Frequently asked questions about SSL certificates

What is an SSL certificate?

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. It is a protocol that secures transactions between your website and the user. This way, it is impossible for malicious people and organisations to steal important data such as credit card numbers and personal data.

An SSL certificate is a sort of identity card on your website. In this certificate, an officially recognized organisation (Comodo, Verisign, Tawthe) confirms that the website is secure. Visitors can recognize the presence of a certificate by the key symbol or the flashy green colour of the address bar that comes with the newest generation of SSL certificates.

An SSL certificate is composed of two parts: a readable text part with data such as your name and an encrypted unreadable part with your digital signature and a public key that confirms your authority.

The main benefits of purchasing your own SSL certificate via Combell:

  • 100% secure data transmission
  • 100% compatible with the most commonly used browsers
  • 100% user-friendly
  • 100% real-time availability of your digital identity

What types of SSL certificates are there?

There are 3 types of SSL certificates.

Domain validation: only the domain name is validated. Thus, no information about the owner of the website is included in the certificate. The guarantee is therefore limited. Not recommended for professional applications.Organisation validation: all the company information are checked and included in the certificate.
Extended validation: it is thoroughly checked if the holder is the actual owner of the website. This procedure implicates administrative work, but gives you and your visitors absolute security. Moreover, this type of SSL certificate can be recognized by the fact that it colours the address bar green.

What certificate is the best? For professional applications, we recommend an organisation validation certificate. If you are still uncertain, feel free to contact our sales department or check out our overview .

For how long is my SSL certificate valid?

That depends on the term of your certificate. When you purchase your SSL certificate, you can choose a term. The longer the term, the higher the discount you get. Always think about purchasing your SSL certificate for a longer term. You can indeed renew your SSL certificate. Then, you get a new certificate that you have to reinstall on your website, server or application.

Do your certificates work on all browsers?

Most of our certificates work on about all the most common browsers released after 1996. There is an exception for mobile devices such as iPhones, Smartphones or BlackBerries. On our website, with the details, it is clearly stated if the certificate supports mobile access.

Is a unique IP address required for SSL?

That is correct. If you install an SSL certificate, you must also have a unique IP address. Combell offers this (paid) option.

What is the difference between standard, multi-domain and Wildcard SSL certificates?

Standard SSL certificates are issued for one single domain name, e.g. www.combell.com. Only at Comodo can you also use the certificate free of charge for the domain name without the www, e.g. http://combell.com.
A multi-domain certificate can be used for multiple domain names that belong to the same organisation. These multi-domain certificates are issued with at least 3 domain names.
Wildcard SSL certificates make it possible to use your certificate on an unlimited number of subdomains (e.g. https://order.combell.com, https://my.combell.com and https://webmail.combell.com).

When is my SSL certificate active?

That depends on the type of SSL certificate. Domain validation and organisation validation certificates are usually delivered within a few hours after receipt of your payment. For extended validation certificates, the delivery usually takes up to 10 days. This is due to the fact that several documents must be completed within your organisation and that additional authenticity checks are carried out.

Am I obliged to purchase other services such as hosting or a server at Combell?

No. You can also purchase only an SSL certificate at Combell. Your website, domain name or server does not have to be hosted by Combell.
Why are you cheaper than if I purchased the SSL certificates directly?
At Combell, we offer SSL certificates much cheaper than when you purchase them directly from Thawte, Verisign, Comodo, etc. The reason for this is that we purchase large volumes. This way, we also get better prices and our customers can benefit from this too.

I need multiple SSL certificates. Do you offer discounts?

If you plan to purchase large quantities of SSL certificates, it is possible to get discounts. Contact our sales department at [route=pro_security_web_order]sales@combell.com or call on 0800 – 8 – 567890 for further information and an offer without commitment.

Multi-domain validation is more expensive per domain name than Standard domain name validation. So, what is the benefit of it?

A Multi-domain validation makes it possible to add multiple domain names and/or host names. With Standard domain name validation, you cannot add multiple domain names or host names/subdomains to the SSL certificate. Only with a Comodo certificate will you also get a free extra domain, such as combell.com.

Only one IP address is necessary (Unique IP per SSL) and the setup fee must be paid only once.
