Answers to your questions about domain names

What is a domain name?

A domain name is actually nothing more than a simple name for the IP address (e.g. 193.111.95.31) of a computer. Every computer that is connected to the Internet has an IP address. Such an IP address makes it possible to find and identify computers and is very similar to a phone number.

When you surf to combell.com, for instance, you actually surf to 193.111.95.33, which is the IP address of the server on which our website is hosted.

Can I cancel my domain name anytime?

Yes, you can cancel your domain name entirely free of charge during the registration period of minimum 1 year. In that case, the registration is of course not renewed once that year has passed. And as a consequence, when you cancel your domain name, someone else can use it.

What does a domain name look like?

Each domain name is composed of a name and an extension. In the case of combell.com, "combell" is the name and ".com" is the extension.

What is an extension?

An extension is the appendix of a domain name which makes it possible to deduce the country of origin of the website or the kind of website that you are dealing with.

Each country and each business region has its own extension. Belgium, for instance, has the .be and the United States have the .us. Further, there are also several generic extensions, such as .biz for Business, .com for Commercial and .info for Information.

Can I register a domain name just like that?

The conditions to register a domain name depend, in principle, on the extension. That is why it is best that you register your domain name with a renowned domain agent such as Combell. This way, everything is taken care of for you and you always comply with the rules for all domain extensions in the world.

How much does a domain name cost?

The price of a domain name depends on the extension and the registration period. At Combell, you always pay a fixed yearly fee and benefit from numerous free services with each registration. Click here for a detailed overview of our prices per extension and per period.

I already have a website. Can I go on that site via my new domain name?

Sure. When you register your domain name with Combell, your domain name is redirected free of charge to your existing website. We refer to this as URL forwarding.

This way, you can e.g. have www.domainname.com redirected to a free webspace such as http://users.myprovider.com/~mycompany.

Be careful though, because such a free webspace has its drawbacks: no real interaction with visitors, slower connections, servers of a lesser quality, no helpdesk or support, etc.

You can avoid this with a professional website hosted at a specialised hosting company such as Combell. Choose <Combell's webhosting> (link naar webhosting) and you will even get your domain name FREE OF CHARGE.

My desired domain name is already taken. Can I retrieve the owner's information?

Yes, you can. Via our handy WHOIS module, you can rapidly and simply retrieve a lot of information about a domain name.

What is a subdomain?

A subdomain is a little piece of address that you will find before the actual domain name. Here's an example: http://documents.domainname.com.

Your domain name can be compared to a main folder. In this folder, you can put several elements; subdomains in this case. This way, you can e.g. create several subdomains for different departments within your company.

Can I create subdomains under my domain name?

No problem. When you register your domain name with Combell, you can create an unlimited number of subdomains.

Is the domain name registered under my name?

Yes. At Combell, we follow a strict code of conduct that guarantees you that your domain name does indeed remain yours.

When is my domain name activated?

As soon as we have received your payment, your domain name is registered in just a few minutes. Once this is done, we send you a confirmation e-mail.
