Domain name registration .fr
Only companies and organisations with an official address in France that is recognised by the French public database can register a .fr domain name. French trade mark owners can also register a .fr domain name. There is no restriction to the number of registrations: you can register as many .fr domain names as you wish.
If you don’t have an address in France, you can use our French official address. Your .fr domain name will then be registered on our official French address. You remain of course the administrative and technical contact person and you maintain the complete domain name rights. We will hand over the owners’ certificate to you; for free of course! As soon as the French legislation will be liberalised, you will be able to register your .fr domain name directly in your personal name. -
Technical information .fr
- When you register or transfer (move) a .fr domain name, you will need the SIRET/SIREN number (i.e. the identification number of your French company). You can find this number on the French certificate of the Chamber of Commerce. Please provide us with this number when placing an order.
- A trade name owner has to provide the official documents of trade name registration when he/she wants to register a .fr domain name. Registration must be done in name of the trade name owner. Please take into account that the trade name has to be at least 6 months old!

Using your own name servers .fr
Take into account that strict regulations are made up by the French domain manager concerning the use of own name servers for .fr domain names. For example the .fr domain name should already be added in the name servers. The zone contact (RNAME) has to be an active e-mail address. Furthermore, an mx record and hostmaster@[domain name] have to exist. You can of course use our name servers in order to make optimal use of your .fr domain name.

Extra information
As from May 11 2004, the .fr domain names are liberalised. Each French citizen or each company with an official address in France that request for a free .fr domain name, can from now on register this name immediately. In the earlier days, the requester had to hand over a certificate first, proving that he/she owned (trade) rights to this domain name. The French domain manager thinks that the further liberalisation of the .fr extension will improve the .fr domain name’s popularity. From 1987 until 2004, only 175.000 .fr domain names have been registered.
During the first 4 days of the liberalisation, the domain manager received almost a quarter of a million requests for registration of a .fr domain name. Some general domain names seemed to be very popular, such as avion.fr, bio.fr, maisons.fr, internet.fr, e-mail.fr, e-commerce.fr,… but also names like blague.fr (joke.fr) and charme.fr.
Between February and April 2004, the number of .fr domain name registrations doubled with 30.000 new names.
