Frequently asked questions about IDNs

What does IDN mean?

IDN stands for "Internationalized Domain Name". IDNs are domain names that contain characters that are not part of the ASCII character set. These characters can e.g. be: é, ç; ö, etc.

When can I register a .eu IDN?

From December 10 2009, it is possible to order .eu IDNs. However, Combell offers the possibility to preregister your desired .eu IDN. This way, you increase your chances to obtain your desired domain name.

Which IDN characters are allowed?

.eu IDNs support 3 character sets: Latin, Greek and Cyrillic. Click here to get a PDF with a complete overview.

Can I use a German ß?

The German umlaut character cannot be used, because the umlaut is automatically translated by the DNS as "ss". The domain name hauptstraße.eu, for instance, is immediately converted to hauptstrasse.eu. Domain names that are typed in with an umlaut are thus identical to the domain names that use "ss" instead of "ß".
