Register a .eu domain name with special characters (IDN)
.EU IDNs such as café.eu or köln.eu
On December 10 2009, the landrush for .eu domain names with international characters such as é, ^, ç, etc. will start. These domains, referred to as IDNs (Internationalized Domain Names) allow the use of non-Latin characters in domain names. Such characters are used in 23 European countries, such as Sweden, Greece, Germany and Bulgaria.
How do IDNs work?
Dot eu IDNs work exactly like other .eu domain names. The technique, however, uses an encoding system included in every browser. Café.eu is e.g. converted to xn--caf-dma.eu and garcon.eu becomes xn--garon-0ra.eu. However, you and your visitors do not have to worry about this: you just keep typing café.eu or garçon.eu in your address bar. In 2004, German IDNs were already introduced. Try it yourself: www.münchen.de now works everywhere in the world, while in the past, the city had to settle for www.muenchen.de.
What do .eu IDNs cost?
The price for a .eu IDN is the same as the price of a regular .eu domain name. Check out the prices of our .eu domain names here.
