A domain name extension for Latin America will probably be created – that is, providing ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) gives its approval. Earlier this month, eCOM-LAC and NIC Mexico, who both campaigned for the domain, communicated that they would choose the extension .LAT.
The request originated in the fact that cultural unity in the Latin American countries transcends national borders. Moreover, it is believed that it will stimulate the growth of Internet in this particular region.
During the last quarter of next year, ICANN will probably pronounce itself on the request.
NIC Mexico manages the national Mexican Top Level Domain .MX. eCOM-LAC on the other hand, is an organisation that campaigns for the growth of Internet in Latin America and the Caribbean.
