ICANN, the international domain manager has decided to terminate the .yu domains. The .yu was the Top Level Domain (ccTLD) of former Yugoslavia.
A transition period has been arranged for .yu domain name owners to switch to a .rs or .me domain name. The .rs domain extension stands for Serbia, wile the .me extension stands for Montenegro.
For the transition, ICANN strives for September 30th 2009.
You may be astonished that it took so long before the former Yugoslavia extension was abandoned. This is all related to the political evolutions that took place over there. Originally, there were plans to attribute the .cs domain extension to the former union of Serbia and Montenegro. But before that happened, both countries went their separate ways and new local organisations had to be found to manage the respective domain extensions.
