About 5 years ago, Saskia registered the domain name twitter.nl. Back then, Twitter.com, one of the 30 most visited websites in the world, did not exist yet. It is however very probable that she will have to give up her domain name to the American Twitter.
The same thing happened to the owner of Facebook.nl. He also registered a domain name before Mark Zuckerberg conceived the idea of starting his well-known community. Facebook.com first offered him a 5-digit figure, but the offer was declined. The case is now being investigated by WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization). The current owner is afraid that he might lose the case: “It would be very upsetting if a domain was “taken” so easily. Companies such as Facebook have so much money that they can win a case without giving you the slightest chance. As for me, I do not have the money.” We will definitely keep you posted on further developments…
