Whois, a database containing data on domains and their owners might soon no longer be accessible to the public. According to several sources, ICANN is considering to mask certain elements.
The reason for this decision is that the database contains contact information from owners and managers of websites. In other words: privacy. But mostly the companies aren’t very thrilled with this decision. Indeed, Whois data are used by companies to trace the identity of supposed domain name hijackers.
Two propositions are being studied regarding future access to Whois. The first consists in limiting the number of publicly accessible data, allowing full access to only one party. The other parties would only obtain access to the data from ICANN if they fulfil specific conditions.
A second proposition would be to mask Whois data from certain groups of domain name owners.
