.TEL: launch during the first half of 2008

The next generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) to see the light of day after .ASIA will probably be .TEL. That’s what DomainesInfo communicated. The specialised site got its information from Philip Colebrook at Telnic during a recent ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) meeting in the US. The launch of the .TEL gTLD will supposedly take place during the first half of next year, with a probable Sunrise period around May 2008. In this frame, Telnic opted to work with a simple 60-day procedure according to the first come first served principle. Only national trade marks will be prioritized.

The purpose of .TEL is to provide a text-based naming and navigation structure for Internet communication (speech, video and messaging) to individuals and companies. It will be possible to establish communication or consult services by entering the .TEL domain name (e.g. brandname.TEL or personsname.TEL) on the communication equipment (that is of course equipped with Internet access).

In this regard, .TEL is an addition to the classic digital systems used by telecom services (e.g. telephone numbers) that is only meant to be used for online communication services.
