Earlier, we announced that IDN will soon be available with .be and .nl extensions.
Now, Sweden will follow that example. A Sunrise period has already set in on the 4th of July 2007 in order to launch those IDN. This decision has been taken because the Swedish law also acknowledges minority languages like Finnish, Sami, Romani, Meänkieli and Yiddish. On top of those language specificities, it will be possible to use special characters from other Nordic countries like the Faroe Islands, Norway and Denmark for .se domains.
However, it has been possible since 2003 to register IDN domains under .se TLDs with character sets including å, ä, ö, ü or é. To the present day, 70000 IDN domain names have already been registered under .se. Owing to the expansion including the minority languages, more than 200 characters will now be added to the existing 42.
