After a long reflection period, the Spanish domain registry has decided to introduce IDN domain names (which are adapted to local language and thus allow the use of Spanish characters).
The decision came about because Spanish companies were registering their domain name with other gTLDs (like e.g. .net) or other country specific TLDs (like Chili) in order to be able to register their company where the character set included the Spanish “ñ” character for instance.
The project was postponed until further notice because the current domain name holders weren’t very enthusiastic about a contingent Sunrise period.
However, the NIC (domain registry) in Spain can’t bypass this phase since it was a governmental institution that decided that new names cannot be launched without including a Sunrise period.
The Spanish decision makes it possible to register domain names that include other characters than the ones from the English alphabet (like á, à, é, è, í, ï, ó, ò, ú, ü, ñ, ç, l•l).
The Sunrise registration period will take place in several stages. It will start on October the 2nd 2007, 6 AM and will end on October the 30th 2007, 6 PM.
