It’s been a while since ICANN has been thinking of terminating the .su domain extension. This extension belonged to the former Soviet Union.
But the Russian DNS manager doesn’t want to know about this cancellation and demands that the .su extension is kept.
There are about 10000 registered .su domain names and about 1500 are registered each year. In comparison, the Russian Top Level Domain (.ru) counts over 1 million registrations.
Maintaining double domain extensions goes against ICANN’s rules according to which every country has only one two-letter national extension.
Russia clearly finds it difficult to leave its federal past behind. It isn’t the first time that ICANN terminates an extension: think of how the .uk (United Kingdom) domain extension was used in comparison with the much less popular .gb (Great Britain) domain that was terminated.
