NIC Mexico chosen for the Latin TLD.

The South American Internet federations have chosen NIC Mexico, the domain registry for .mx, as their partner to create the Top Level Domain for the Latin community.

In the next months, the South American Internet federations and NIC Mexico will intensively cooperate in the framework of the necessary steps aiming to create a TLD for the Latin community. The proposal will consecutively be presented to ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) that will review the case and decide if the extension will be granted or not.

NIC Mexico is very enthusiastic, as well as proud to have been chosen by the South American Internet federations to lead this project. NIC also understands how important this extension is for the Latin American community.

Hopes are high that ICANN will open a period during which proposals can be submitted in the first semester of 2008. This period will allow the creation of this domain tailored for Latin America.

There’s a real chance that ICANN will approve the creation of this extension, since it already approved as .eu for Europe and soon, people will be able to register .Asia domains for Asia. NIC Mexico and the South American Internet federations are very enthusiastic about this. And so are we!
