As mentioned previously , ICANN intends to relax rules on personalized domain extensions as from the second quarter of 2009. That means that the registration of .nike or .brussels will be possible.
Recently, ICANN’s proposition was open to feedback from the Internet community. However, the community is unsatisfied because this liberalisation goes together with high costs relative to the request and the maintenance of a personalised extension. The American government is also sceptical about these plans. Its members are worried about the security and the stability of the new domain extensions.
For the time being, it looks like the new extensions will definitely not be launched as planned. Anyway, we will keep you informed…
