The Board of Directors of the French AFNIC, has decided during its October 21 meeting to open .fr and .re domain name registrations to individuals by July 2006.
Currently, individuals may only register domain names under Second Level Domains such as .nom.fr or .nom.re (and even that only following the syntax 'domainname.nom.fr' or 'domainname-freefield.nom.fr').
With the expected easing of the registration rules, individuals of age and having an address in France, will be allowed to register domain names of their own choice under .fr or .re (for instance: 'whatIwant.fr').
The final date of the opening and the practical details of the procedures will be made public at least three months before the actual coming into force of the new registration rules.
