DNS.BE reduces cost of domain name disputes

Defendant has to pay back half of the procedure costs if he/she loses.

DNS.BE (The Belgian Association for Internet Domain Name Registration) will financially intervene in the so called alternatve dispute resolution, from next year on. This procedure allows for people that have established rights to a domain name, to reclaim the domain name from anybody that has registered it.

This alternative procedure was developed together with Cepina, the Belgian Centre of Arbitrage and Mediation. DNS.BE expects the new arrangement to become operational from the start of next year.

Untill now, the costs were always for the plaintiff, regardless of whether they'd win the case or not. It was also impossible to reclaim the costs from the defendant. From now on, half of the cost will be refunded by DNS.BE, which basically reduces the price from 1600 to 800 euro. DNS will reclaim this amount from the defendant that lost the case.

With this liberalization DNS.BE wants to open up the procedure for the general public at large.
