Chinese national domain extension makes top 3

CNNIC, the Chinese information centre, recently reported that the national TLD (Top-Level Domain) .cn has become the third largest national domain extension in the world since last May 21st.

A total of over 5.3 million .cn domain names have been registered. The extension is still preceded by Germany’s .de and Great Britain’s .uk

80 % of all Chinese companies and 97 % of the provincial authorities use the .cn extension.

China has several generic second-level domain names such as .com.cn for commercial companies and .gov.cn for governmental institutions. Most foreign companies register .cn or .com.cn domain names. There are also second-level domain extensions for several of the country’s provinces.

According to different sources, China has recently become the home of the largest number of Internet users worldwide (137 million regular Internet users at the end of 2006). This is of course related to the gigantic population of this country, which, according to Wikipedia, already has over 1.32 milliard inhabitants. Moreover, China is one of the countries that have the fastest growing Internet penetration.
