auDA, short for ‘.au Domain Administration Limited’, the Australian domain name registry, is conducting a study that could eventually lead to a simpler registration procedure for national domain names.
Today, one indeed has to have at one’s disposal a registered trade mark or company name that matches the wanted .au domain name in order to get hold of it.
The auDA study focuses on 2 points:
- Should it be possible to directly register a .au (e.g. domainname.au)? If so, which rules should be applied?
- Should the rules for domain extensions .com.au, .net.au, .org.au, .asn.au and .id.au be relaxed?
We’ll soon know if the rules will be relaxed or not. To be continued…
