ICANN agreed to the introduction of a special domain for Asian countries.
During a meeting in Brasil ICANN has given its approval for the proposal to introduce .asia. That approval was merely a formality, since the organisation that is responsable for domain names had already given green light to .asia in October.
The new TLD is intended for websites in China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and surrounding countries. The .asia domain will be managed by the company "Dotasia Organization"
Registrations of .asia shall be reserved for Asian countries including Australia. Until now companies and individuals from that region could only use the specific country extensions such as .cn and .jp as well as general extensions such as .com.
The total number of active domain name extensions will be at 266, after .asia has been added .
