A record number of 112 million domain names are now registered. That is 30% more than just one year ago and a 6% increase in the previous quarter. The 5 largest TLDs remain .com, .de , .net, .uk and .org.
During the third quarter 9.4 million new domains were registered, which is the third highest number of registrations ever in a single quarter. Mostly because of the upsurge of .eu registrations in Q2 new registrations actually have decreased compared to the second quarter.
ccTLDs (country domains) also continue to grow. There are now 248 ccTLDs and 5 of them saw double digit growth compared to the previous quarter: .at (Austria), .es (Spain), .fr (France), .ru (Russia), and .us (United States).
Domain registrations continue to be buoyed by investors that park domains. These parked domains generate revenue from pay-per-click ads, typically serviced by Yahoo and Google. Approximately 24% of .com and .net domain names are parked according to observers.
