1.5 million .fr domain names
On the 10th of September, the 1.5 millionth .fr domain name has been registered for a band (lessecouesduvocal.fr). In 2002, there were merely 100,000 .fr domain names. Previous milestones were 500,000 .fr domains in July 2006 and 1 million in January 2008.
By way of comparison, Belgium has almost 950,000 .be domain names in use, the Netherlands have exceeded the amount of 3.5 million .nl domains and Germany remains in the lead with over 13 million .de domains. For many Europeans, their own country-code domain is thus the preferred extension.
